How to Choose a Merino Wool T-shirt: Outdoor vs. Everyday Use and Key Points for Comparing Brands
“I started looking for a merino wool T-shirt, but there are so many brands and price ranges that I no longer know which one to choose.”
We often hear comments like this. From highly functional pieces by outdoor brands to everyday wear from fashion brands, there are indeed many options available.
But in fact, once you imagine “where and how you want to wear it”, the right piece naturally becomes easier to see. In this article, we will organize a few simple hints for choosing a merino wool T-shirt you will not regret buying.
THE DIFFERENCE Outdoor Use and Everyday Use — What Makes Them Different?
Many merino wool T-shirts were originally designed for harsh environments such as mountain climbing and trekking. They need to be as light as possible, dry quickly, and resist tearing even when rubbed against rocks or branches. For that reason, the fabric is often made thinner, the silhouette tends to be sporty, and a proud brand logo is often placed on the chest.
That kind of design is extremely reliable when you are aiming for a mountain summit. But in many cases, the place where we spend our time is not the mountains, but “daily life in the city.”
Relaxing at a café on a day off. Dining with someone important. Or wearing a jacket in an air-conditioned office. In those situations, what you may want is not extreme lightness, but rather “an elegant appearance that looks natural even when worn on its own.”
Key Priorities by Intended Use
Even with the same merino wool, the ideal situation changes depending on the design direction.

CHECKLIST Five Small Points to Check Before Buying
When looking for “a piece to wear in the city,” where should you look on a product page? There are a few slightly technical terms, but once you know these five points, choosing becomes much more enjoyable.
Can you check the fineness of the fiber, also known as micron?
Even when a product is called “merino wool,” the thickness of the fibers can vary. It is generally said that the human skin begins to feel itchiness at around 22μm, or microns. If you want to wear it directly against the skin in sweaty seasons, choosing ultra-fine fibers of around 18–20μm or below will help reduce itchiness and allow you to enjoy a silk-like sheen.
Is the fabric thickness right for summer?
Fabric thickness is expressed in “ounces” or “g/㎡.” For summer wear, around 150–200g/㎡ offers a good balance between opacity and coolness. If the fabric is too thin, it may feel more like innerwear, making you a little more conscious when wearing it outside on its own.
Is it blended with other materials?
When polyester or nylon is blended into the fabric, durability may increase, but the original benefits of merino wool — odor resistance, humidity control, and natural sheen — can become slightly diluted. If you want to fully experience the advantages of merino wool, we recommend choosing “100% wool.”
Is the design simple, without a conspicuous logo?
A large logo on the chest tends to create a sporty impression. With a plain, logo-free design, it can be worn naturally under a tailored jacket and will likely become useful in more situations, both on and off duty.
Is it machine-washable?
Wool may have an image of requiring hand washing, but if you are choosing it as everyday wear, selecting a machine-washable item makes daily care much easier. The convenience of simply placing it in a laundry net and washing it on a delicate or wool cycle is an important point for long-term use.
MICRON GRADE
The fiber diameter of merino wool is expressed in microns, or μm. The smaller the number, the finer and smoother the fiber. Under international quality standards, 18.5μm or below is classified as “Super 100's,” while 17μm or below is classified as “Super 120's.” Many merino wool products on the market are mainly around 22–24μm, and ultra-fine fibers equivalent to Super 100's are limited to roughly the top 10%. This slight difference in fiber diameter has a major influence on both wearing comfort and the sense of sheen.
WHY C-ONE Why C-one Focuses on Merino Wool for City Life
The merino wool T-shirts we create at C-one are designed with the five points above in mind.
For the fibers that touch the skin, we selected an ultra-fine 18.5μm Super 100's merino wool, and finished the fabric with 100% wool without blending in other materials. The fabric has an exquisite thickness that is not too sheer when worn on its own, yet is also resistant to stuffiness even in midsummer. The design is kept completely logo-free so that it blends naturally wherever you wear it. Of course, it can also be washed at home in your washing machine on a delicate or wool cycle.
This is not clothing made for climbing harsh mountains. Instead, it is a piece created to help you spend Japan’s humid summer cleanly, elegantly, and without stress. We hope it can be clothing that stays close to your everyday life.
